Suncrest celebrates Firefighting students with first graduation at new institution

MELVILLE, SASK. – Suncrest College has only been an institute for less than five months, but its first graduation class was able to walk the stage Friday, signifying a new era in the process.

Platoon #19, the graduating class of the Summer/Fall Firefighter – National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 1001 program took home more than just their certifications on October 27, 2023. The group also now have the title as the first course to receive certification under Suncrest College.

The program curriculum, provided in cooperation with the Saskatchewan Public Safety Agency, exceeds NFPA requirements including more practice runs and hands-on activities at our Saskatchewan Emergency Response Institute near Melville. This training is widely endorsed by fire departments as a necessary credential for new hires.

In total, 14 students are now considered Professional Firefighters thanks to the program, which runs 24 weeks.

Along with the graduation, five students also received awards during Friday’s ceremonies.

Applications for the next intake for the NFPA 1001 program in Spring 2024 are out now and can be found on Suncrest College’s new website: suncrestcollege.ca.
