YORKTON, SK — YORKTON, SK –Suncrest College’s Applied Research team is advancing its commitment to environmental sustainability with a project aimed at significantly reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions at the Trades and Technology Centre (TTC) in Yorkton. Initially, the team explored repurposing waste heat from the Power Engineering Lab’s boilers to improve energy efficiency, but after careful assessment, they pivoted to a more immediate and equally impactful solution—upgrading the TTC’s lighting system to energy-efficient LEDs.
The retrofit replaced 76 outdated metal halide fixtures in the workshop, atrium, and Power Engineering Lab with LED technology, which is now more cost-effective and efficient than ever. This upgrade is expected to cut electricity consumption by 50%, reducing carbon emissions by 35,620 kg per year—equivalent to removing six cars from the road. It will also save the college $8,000 annually in electricity costs.
Beyond sustainability, the project has dramatically improved lighting conditions across campus. On average, brightness increased by 786 lux, with some areas now 50% to 400% brighter. This enhancement creates a better learning and working environment for students and staff while reinforcing the college’s commitment to energy efficiency.
“We are excited to move forward with this initiative, which allows us to continue making a meaningful impact in reducing our carbon footprint,” said Dr. Gwen Machnee, Chair of Applied Research at Suncrest College. “This project not only enhances energy efficiency but also provides a real-world example of sustainable solutions for students and the community.”
Funded by a $70,000 grant from Colleges and Institutes Canada (CICan) Campus Living Labs ImpACT Climate program and Environment and Climate Change Canada, the project is expected to serve as a model for other educational institutions. Suncrest College will continue sharing updates through on-campus signage, social media, and press releases.
