The Addictions, Community, and Mental Health Professional Diploma program is a full-time program delivered in-person at Suncrest College's Nipawin Campus and through remote, in-person delivery at the Fort Qu'Appelle Campus. Students will learn and apply Indigenous and Western-based holistic approaches to healing and addiction counselling. The program utilizes a lifespan approach that includes youth, adults and older adults.
Addiction and recovery models will be examined as a process for working with self, clients, and communities. The first year of this program focuses on internal work, becoming familiar with the role of a mental health and wellness provider, and developing skills in professional practice. In the second year of the program, skills are refined in the practice of counselling. This approach helps students to develop professionally and enhances one’s sense of self. The work that it takes students to achieve this level of awareness may be challenging. However, the environment of community and healing created in this program supports students to excel as professionals in their chosen field.

This course is designed to introduce you to academic practices with an emphasis on academic writing. Since good grammar is foundational to clear and effective communication, you will regularly review grammar rules and practice exercises to strengthen your understanding of English language structure. You will gain familiarity with using academic databases and assess sources based on specific criteria. This course models the stages of academic writing from the pre-writing stage through to the revising stage. You will observe the rules of APA 7th Edition Style Guide when citing secondary sources and formatting their essays. At the end of this course, you will have written a polished persuasive essay and demonstrated successful completion of every stage of the writing process by presenting a portfolio of evidence to the instructor.

You will investigate your future role as a mental health and wellness provider by learning about health and wellness from Indigenous and non-Indigenous perspectives. You will also examine the ethics and legalities in the mental health field. You will complete this course by writing a letter of interest and a resume, as you prepare for future practicum placements.

Indigenous Studies is an introductory course in which you will learn about who Indigenous peoples are, some of the impacts of colonization, as well as how Indigenous worldviews influence Indigenous science and art. You will read articles, watch videos, participate in group discussions, and get introduced to inquiry-based research. You will demonstrate what you have learned in presentations and through other mediums, such as art.

This course is designed to introduce you to the dynamics of addiction through exploring historical and current perspectives, theories, and treatment approaches. You will explore how symptoms of addiction impact individuals, families and communities. This course provides foundational knowledge on the progressive nature of addiction and recovery. Application of the course content will benefit those entering the mental health field.

This course explores both Indigenous ways of knowing and Western approaches to family dynamics and addictions. You will consider how family identities and structures influence mental health in relation to the self and to the clients they will serve as mental health professionals. You will examine historical models of Indigenous family life and its degradation as a result of colonization. You will reflect on the complex mental health challenges and addictions that impact familial relationships and explore your own family-of-origin experiences. To that end, you will research your family tree and uncover the patterns, challenges, and quality of relationships that define your understanding of family. Finally, you will evaluate family-based mental health supports and consider how culture-informed care benefits those in the recovery process from trauma and addictions.

This course will focus on the specific classifications of drugs and their effects on human body systems. The study of pharmacology is essential as it provides key information on the dynamics of various drugs, including associated terminology, characteristics, clinical profile of system withdrawal, and the impact of the drug based on short- and long-term use. You will also begin to describe and incorporate the neuroscience of addiction perspective into your theoretical understanding of drugs and addiction and relevant practices related to research and treatment of addictions.

Welcome to Introduction to Psychology! Have you ever wondered why people behave the way they do or how the mind can play a powerful role in all of this? The study of psychology attempts to answer these questions! Students will come to understand what is currently known about behaviour, and the mental processes of humans through Western and Indigenous perspectives. Topics covered will include the history and foundation of psychology, the brain and its functions, emotion, sensation, perception, consciousness, memory, language, personality, disorders, learning, and motivation. Through participatory learning, students gain important experience in applying their knowledge of concepts through various learning activities and assessments.

In this course, you will examine and assess how a variety of factors affect healing and allow you to see healing as an ongoing process rather than a destination. You will be able to demonstrate your understanding of the various healing approaches to better assist you when in the field. You will look at healing through a two-eyed lens to look at Indigenous and non-Indigenous ways of healing. You will develop a deeper insight into assessing which Indigenous models of healing are most suitable for you and your clients and communities. Finally, you will design your own Treatment Centre by integrating the Indigenous models of healing that were taught throughout the course as well as by identifying the gaps within the current mental health and wellness field.

In this course, you will examine the complex issues surrounding youth mental health, addictions, and resilience. You will explore the impacts of intergenerational trauma on Indigenous youth, identify the developmental factors contributing to mental health challenges and addictions, and examine effective strategies for prevention, intervention, and treatment. Through a strength-based lens, you will examine the components of youth resilience, including cultural identity, coping skills, and support systems. You will also investigate innovative approaches to working with youth and their families, emphasizing collaboration, empowerment, and cultural sensitivity. You will engage in the course through the reading and viewing of class materials and participating in large and small group discussions and class activities. You will show your learning by completing a digital story, an expository essay, an artistic depiction, and a concept map/video presentation.

In this course, you will examine both Indigenous teachings and Western theories of human development and contrast the two worldviews. You will also examine developmental theories related to self and reflect upon how these teachings and theories can be utilized while working with people afflicted with addiction. You will engage in the course through the reading and viewing of class materials and participating in large and small group discussions and class activities. You will show your learning by examining case studies, completing a photo story, a compare/contrast essay, a reflection, and a final exam.

This course focuses on experiences of grief and loss, which includes topics such as coping, supporting, and processing. Attention will be paid to the relationship between substance abuse, grief, and loss. You will gain an understanding of the seven stages of grief and recognize that there is no specific order or right process for grieving individuals. You will examine the skills required to assist clients and families who have experienced loss and will practice these skills amongst your peers.

This course will introduce the foundations of counselling, including historical approaches and modern advances in psychology. You will gain knowledge of the essential qualities of an effective counsellor while examining Western and Indigenous approaches to counselling. As you consider these approaches, self-reflection activities will further guide the construction of your own future approach to counselling. You will develop various counselling insights, skills, and strategies through simulated counselling sessions.

You will have the opportunity to participate in land-based activities and reflect on the importance of land-based education for mental health and wellness. You will leave the course with a wellness bundle that you created to further support you and your future clients in the helping field.

This course focuses on Indigenous culture and practices within the mental health and wellness field. You will identify respectful ways of incorporating Indigenous ways of knowing, being, and doing within your practice with children, youth, and families. Various protocols, ceremonies, and methods are introduced to support you and your clients when in the helping field. You will be introduced to the diverse traditions and protocols in the Indigenous communities through teachings and sharing from Elders and Knowledge Keepers of various nations.

This course will provide you with an understanding of the diverse emotional and behavioural challenges you will face in the helping field, specifically with youth. You will gain knowledge about diagnoses, including intellectual and learning disabilities and how their symptoms may differ from youth to adults. Risk and protective factors will be discussed as they relate to the onset of substance abuse. You will conclude this course by examining prevention programs and treatment options.

First Qualified/First Admitted
The First Qualified/First Admitted (FQFA) process is used for most of Suncrest college's programs. When we determine that you meet the program's admission requirements, you will be offered admission based on the date you fully qualify for the program. The earlier you provide the appropriate documents and information that qualify you for admission the more likely it is you will secure a seat in the program of your choice. Qualified applicants who are not offered a seat must reapply for the next academic year.

Accepted applicants will be asked to submit a Criminal Record Check (CRC) and Vulnerable Sector Check (VSC) prior to the program start date.
Character References
Must submit two character references that indicate the applicant has refrained from the use of drugs and alcohol for at least two years prior to the program start date.

Must submit a statement of intent – guiding questions will be provided

Suncrest College opens post-secondary applications on October 1.
Apply to this program by using the "Apply to this program" found in the banner image on this page or by using the “Apply Now” at the top right. To apply you will need to create an account with Suncrest College. Once you have received the account created email, login with your new Suncrest Student credentials and complete the application form. There is a non-refundable $60.00 application fee and applications will not be processed until the application fee is paid.
Please note that your application is not considered complete until we have received all of your supporting documents. At that time your eligibility for the program can be assessed. Transcripts must be official and sent to Suncrest College directly from the supplying institution.
Once you meet the program entrance requirements, you will be asked to pay a non-refundable $350.00 tuition deposit to secure your seat. When the tuition deposit is paid you will receive an acceptance letter.

When can I apply for Saskchewan Polytechnic Courses?
You can apply anytime for SaskPolytech certificate programs at "College". However, please note that applicants are accepted on a first come/first qualified basis. Original transcripts are required for acceptance into a program. Applications can be sent without the original but will not be officially considered until all entrance requirements are met (original transcript included).
If a program runs full-time can I still take it on a part-time basis?
Yes, most of the programs are available on a class by class basis (for domestic students only). If you are interested in taking a program but can only do a few classes per semester we can create a schedule that will suit your needs. Some classes do have a prerequisite requirement and need to be taken in a certain order. We can help guide you through the process!
How do I apply for a Saskatchewan Polytechnic Program as an International Student?
Students can complete the online application form and pay the $140.00 processing fee. Applications must include secondary and post-secondary transcripts and documents. English proficiency results must also be attached.
Are there English language requirements for International Students?
All programs require an IELTS minimum 6.5 with no bands less than 5.5.
Will there be assignments and homework as part of my program?
Students will cover several courses in each semester and are responsible for assignments and studying. This will definitely require homework outside of class time.
