Diagnostic Medical Sonography, also known as Ultrasound, is a specialized profession that uses technology involving the application of high-frequency sound waves on patients to aid in medical diagnoses. This program prepares students, through theoretical and clinical training, to conduct Ultrasound examinations, focusing on areas such as obstetrics and gynecology, abdomen and superficial structures, and vascular sonographic studies. Students will be trained to work as part of a patient care team to assess patients and provide information to physicians for diagnoses and monitoring patients’ health condition.
The Diagnostic Medical Sonography - Ultrasound program is a Red River College Polytechnic program, offered at Suncrest College. This 28-month Advanced Diploma program combines blended theory with hands-on learning and practical clinical experience."

This is a competitive entry program. Therefore, not all applicants who meet admission requirements will be offered a seat. Applicants who meet admission requirements but do not receive an offer of admittance may reapply for a future academic year by submitting a new application and application fee. Carefully review all admission requirement before applying to this program.
Note: Preference is given to Saskatchewan applicants.
Applications for the Diagnostic Medical Sonography Diploma open on October 1, the Application & Document deadline is April 15, 2026, with a final document submission deadline of May 15, 2026.
Academic & Document requirements (7 requirements)
The academic requirements are at least 27 credits units of post-secondary courses with credits required in the three categories listed below
Transcripts for each of requirements 1 - 3: All transcripts need to be sent to Suncrest College directly from the Institutions they were obtained. If you are still taking courses to meet the admission requirements, submit an official interim transcript by the application & document deadline of April 15 and ensure a final transcript is sent to Admissions by May 15.
1. Postsecondary transcript showing completion of at least 18 credits of diploma or degree level courses.
2. Post-Secondary transcript showing successful completion of 6 credit units of Human Anatomy & Physiology
3. Post-Secondary transcript showing successful completion of 3 credit units of Medical Terminology
4. English Language Requirements

Diagnostic Medical Sonography Program Requirements
Students will need to provide the following after acceptance into the program, and students will be responsible for any costs associated with these items:
Mask Fit - 2 sizes
Accepted applicants are required to provide evidence of current N95 respirator mask fit testing prior to start of clinical practicum as directed by the program. Mask Testing is recommended to be updated annually, however, it is mandatory to be updated every 2 years. If expiry date occurs within the program delivery date, student must re-submit proof of testing that has a validity covering the duration of the program.
WHMIS Globally Harmonized System (GHS) Certification
Accepted applicants are required to provide evidence of WHMIS certification upon admission to the program. Recertification will be required every three years to remain current.
Transferring Lifting Repositioning (TLR®)
Accepted applicants will be required to provide evidence of Transferring, Lifting and Repositioning (TLR®) © certification upon admission to the program. TLR® certification is valid for 3 years from the date of completion. Recertification may be required during your studies.
Criminal Record Check
Criminal record checks are required and must include a vulnerable sector check. It is at the discretion of the health region whether a student with a criminal record will be allowed to participate in clinical components. All costs associated with the criminal record check are the responsibility of the student. Criminal record checks must be dated July 1 or later of the current program year.
Immunization Record
Current immunization information must be submitted prior to the clinical portion of the program starting. You may require further immunization. All costs associated with vaccines are the responsibility of the student.
Notes:
Travel and shift work will be required during clinical placement. Some clinical placements may be in communities outside your main campus location. Travel arrangements and costs are the responsibility of the student. A driver’s license and vehicle are strongly recommended.
Laptop and internet access are required for the delivery of the program.
Immunization records will be required, and all students will be responsible for any immunizations and screening tests and costs, as per the Red River College Immunization Policy.
If you have a criminal record you may not be able to complete this program. If you are listed on a Child Abuse Registry or Adult Abuse Registry you will not be able to complete this program.

Everyone communicates, but are they doing it well? Communicative competence takes practice and self-awareness. By developing their communication skills, the student will improve their interpersonal ability, intercultural competence, and digital fluency to prepare the student for success in the workplace. In Communication Strategies, the student will learn through discovery and project-based activities to practice approaching situations critically and collaboratively. The strategies the student will gain in this course will be useful throughout their program and in their chosen industry.

Allied Health Professionals are an integral part of the healthcare system, providing a range of diagnostic, technical, therapeutic, and support services. In this course, students will be introduced to critical topics, and skills in which all allied-health professionals must demonstrate competency. Students will explore legal, technical and theoretical topics related to the provision of healthcare. In addition, application type activities will enable students to develop skills such as Infection control techniques, proper use of body mechanics and assessing vital signs.

This course will introduce students to the theoretical principles of abdominal sonography, abdominal scanning techniques and pathologies seen in the abdomen. Students will learn to recognize and understand the normal anatomy, physiology, and sonographic appearance of the great vessels, liver, spleen, pancreas, kidneys, and adrenal glands.

This course will give students the opportunity to connect theoretical material with clinical practice through spending time at a Sonography department within a RRC affiliated healthcare facility. Under appropriate supervision, students will begin to apply concepts of diagnostic medical sonography to clinical practice by observing and assisting registered Sonographers perform exams on actual patients while also giving students exposure to other operational aspects of a diagnostic imaging facility.

In this course, students will explore healthcare content and concepts through participating in various interactive workshops and attending seminars with guest speakers on topics of interest. Students will be offered a wide variety of interdisciplinary healthcare topics in addition to program specific topics related to their chosen field of either Medical Radiologic Technology, Medical Laboratory Sciences, Diagnostic Medical Sonography or Primary Care Paramedicine. PRAC-4002
In this course, students will begin to apply concepts of Diagnostic Sonography to clinical practice at an RRC affiliated diagnostic imaging department within a healthcare facility. Students will build on the theoretical knowledge and practical skills learned in the didactic phase of the program and apply them in a clinical setting. Under appropriate supervision, students will be given the opportunity to perform general scanning procedures while expanding their ability to identify common pathologies. This course will also reinforce and strengthen student’s patient care skills, history taking, ability to write technical impressions, communication with radiologists, and overall patient management.

In this course, students will continue to apply concepts of Diagnostic Sonography to clinical practice at an RRC affiliated diagnostic imaging department within a healthcare facility. Under appropriate supervision, students will be expected to assume increased responsibility in general sonography, including more independence with performing basic scanning procedures, image critique and interpretation of common pathologies. Students will be expected to assume a greater role in taking patient history, writing technologist impressions, presenting cases to a radiologist, and interacting with patients and their families.

In this course, students will continue to apply concepts of Diagnostic Sonography to clinical practice at an RRC affiliated diagnostic imaging department within a healthcare facility. Under appropriate supervision, students will be given the opportunity to take primary responsibility for general sonography procedures, integrating all of the necessary skills and knowledge to be able to scan as an entry-level sonographer. Emphasis will be on completing cases effectively and in a timely manner while achieving all the Sonography Canada competencies (CCSAs) which are a requirement for completion of the program.
