Read Vickie Lake's Story

Vickie is a graduate of Tisdale Unit Composite School. She has lived and worked in the Northeast area of Saskatchewan for most of her life. A few years ago Vickie knew she wanted to make a career change, but like many other adult learners who have a family and financial obligations, leaving employment and moving to the city is not a desired option. When Vickie decided to pursue a career in Social Work she was pleasantly surprised to find that she could take her entire Bachelor of Social Work degree locally. Vickie said, “I would not have chosen to go back to university to obtain my Social Work Degree if it was not offered through Cumberland College.” As a parent of teenage children moving to the city was not an option personally or financially. Since both her University and work schedules were flexible, Vickie kept her employment with Northeast School Division allowing her to better afford her post-secondary education and keep her student loan down. The other neat thing about taking classes in a small community is that Vickie’s work and university studies were in the same community and sometimes even in the same building making it handy to access classes and the support services in between job duties.

Vickie said her favorite memory at Cumberland College will always be the friendly, encouraging and welcoming atmosphere created by staff at the Tisdale Campus. She encourages future students to stay dedicated and focused, take control of your education, believe in yourself and do not hesitate to seek guidance when needed. As with all of our Alumni, Vickie is an excellent example of hard work and determination leading to success. We hope her story inspires others to follow their dreams no matter your age or situation.

In May 2015, Vickie walked across the stage of the John Barron Auditorium in Tisdale to receive her Bachelor of Social Work Degree. She is currently employed as a Saskatchewan Registered Social Worker at the Nipawin Oasis Community Centre Co-op as a Family Support Coordinator for the Centre’s Family Support Program. Her future plan is to obtain a Master’s Degree in Social Work. It is great to see Cumberland College graduates working within our communities.

Congratulations Vickie on your new career in Social Work.
