Mathew is an international student from Vazhakulam, Kerala, which is the Pineapple City of India. He graduated high school in India in 2006 and then went on to become a Registered Nurse in 2010. He worked as an RN for 7 years in India before coming to Canada in 2017 with the goal of taking health care training in this country. In May 2018, he graduated from the Continuing Care Assistant program at Cumberland College.

Mathew said he was drawn to take his training at Cumberland College because it seemed like a good fit for his needs. As an international student, he also found that the support of the College registrar was most helpful in navigating the requirements to study in another country.

The memories at Cumberland College have been many according to Mathew. His most memorable were the cultural days, the staff and student potluck lunches and Orange Shirt Day in honour of Truth and Reconciliation for Residential School Survivors. Mathew said he also appreciated “the many services provided by Learner Services regarding careers in the health region, support in applying to the College scholarship program, and workshops on wellness and Mental Health First Aid.” Mathew was the recipient of a $1000 Cumberland College scholarship.

Coming to another country is never easy. There are new languages and cultures to learn. Winter was Mathew’s greatest challenge. He said that coming from a tropical country to freezing temperatures was quite an adjustment. Financial strain is also common for students particularly for those from another country. Fortunately, Mathew was able to find jobs very soon after arriving in Melfort. He was able to buy a car and the College staff helped him find housing.

Next on Mathew’s bucket list is to become an RN in Canada which was his profession back in India. His words of advice to future students is, “Cumberland is the best place you can be. So make the best out of it. The family feel which you receive from authorities and students boasts your confidence.”

Mathew currently has a permanent position with Plus Industries in Melfort and is also working as a casual CCA with Saskatchewan Health Authority. Congratulations on your many successes Mathew. You have been a wonderful asset to both the College and our community in Melfort.
