At Suncrest College you will be a part of a unique partnership with 2 other Saskatchewan colleges (Carlton Trail College, and Great Plains College) that will allow you to study with a cohort of students from across the province. This program is offered through blended delivery with face-to-face labs on Thursdays. Suncrest College seats are limited, so be sure to apply early!
Our certificate program offers a specific concentration on crop production. The courses offered will allow you to master fundamental skills that are essential for modern agricultural operations, including:
Upon completion of your certificate program, you will also be given the option to transfer into year two of Lakeland’s Crop Technology Diploma program, offered on its Vermilion campus. The diploma program will allow you to gain knowledge and skills through agronomy, production, precision farming, and financial management classes while being immersed in a hands-on experience through industry practicum or Lakeland’s student-managed farm.
Whether you choose the exit with your certificate, or choose to continue on to the diploma program, you will find yourself prepared to contribute to a farming operation or to work in the retail agriculture sector.
AE 100
This course deals with the economic principles underlying production, markets, and the national economy. Agricultural examples are used throughout.

AE 101
AE 101 introduces the student to the Lakeland College Student Managed Farm and Crop Technology Practicum. It provides students with basic principles of working in teams in a business environment. The course also introduces students to field reporting software and more complex Excel computing problem solving.

This class is designed so students have an understanding of the key accounting and financial concepts related to their agriculture operations. A computerised accounting system is introduced and utilised for data entry and financial statement preparation.

AE 300
This course provides an in-depth analysis of both the pricing and delivery options available to the farm manager. Students learn how to analyse the grain, oilseed, and pulse crop markets.

This is a course in oral and written communication as it relates to the agricultural community. Assignments focus on agricultural topics, employment issues, and interview skills. Assignments are related to activities students may encounter when they are part of the agricultural community. Labs will focus on computer skills related to Microsoft Office and other software applications.

CR 160
This course introduces the student to basic plant botany and the production of grain and oilseed crops in Western Canada. The student studies plant physiology, the major plant parts and their role in plant growth and development. The students discover what the major growth factors are for crops on the prairies and how they can affect these crops. They combine this with specific best practices for the major grain and oilseed crops of Western Canada.

CR 242
This is a course in weed biology, ecology and identification. The integration of common cultural, biological and herbicide weed management practices with the entire cropping system is discussed. Herbicide types, modes of action and responsible use of herbicides is included.

MR 112
This course covers the related areas of tillage, seeding and fertilizing equipment. Emphasis is placed on systems common to the Western Canadian prairies. Skills are implemented to assist decision-making and problem-solving in common agricultural production situations. Course topics are studied in the classroom, the shop, and in the field if the season permits.

MR 142
This course provides an in-depth study of pesticide spray application equipment commonly used on prairie grain farms. Pesticide legislation, safety, health and environmental considerations are covered to assist those interested in pursuing a provincial pesticide applicator's license. Application accuracy and efficiency are emphasized, as is safe and responsible use of these pesticides.

SO 102
This course involves a study of the basic properties of soils. The course studies physical, chemical, and biological properties of soils to provide an understanding of how soils function as a growth medium in agriculture. The Soil Orders of the Canadian System of Soil Classification relevant to field crop production in Western Canada are reviewed.

The First Qualified/First Admitted (FQFA) process is used for most of Suncrest college's programs. When we determine that you meet the program's admission requirements, you will be offered admission based on the date you fully qualify for the program. The earlier you provide the appropriate documents and information that qualify you for admission the more likely it is you will secure a seat in the program of your choice. Qualified applicants who are not offered a seat must reapply for the next academic year.

Apply to this program by using the "Apply to this program" found in the banner image on this page or by using the “Apply Now” at the top right. There is a non-refundable $60.00 application fee and applications will not be processed until the application fee is paid.
Please note that your application is not considered complete until we have received all of your supporting documents. At that time your eligibility for the program can be assessed. Transcripts must be official and sent to Suncrest College directly from the supplying institution.
Once you meet the program entrance requirements, you will be asked to pay a non-refundable $350.00 tuition deposit to secure your seat. When the tuition deposit is paid you will receive an acceptance letter.
